Hailing from Gibsonia, PA, Gil Merritt is a Finger Lakes area artist who utilizes pipe cleaners to construct all manner of animals, super heroes, dinosaurs, and dragons. His long time interest in pipe cleaner art started at the age of four with twisting garbage ties into shapes of dinosaurs to add Tyrannosaurs to his collection. Today, he is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology with a BFA in Illustration. His work has been sold and exhibited repeatedly around Rochester, including places like the Living Dead Weekend, Mayday! Underground, the Strong National Museum of Play, and others. Merritt continues to teach his skills to others through hands-on programs and share his love for creation.

Workshop

Character Creation
Unleash your creativity in this fun and interactive class where you’ll learn to craft unique pipe-cleaner figures inspired by your favorite animals, superheroes, and more! Led by the enthusiastic Gil, each session features step-by-step demonstrations that make the crafting process both easy and exciting. Customized programs include;

GARDEN SUPERHEROES
Learn what Superhero powers certain critters in the garden have. Then it’s
time to create one of 4 Garden Superheroes: a frog, grasshopper, ladybug or
honeybee. Add this to a lesson on habitats & ecology.

HEROES - OLD & NEW
Explore what makes a Hero/Heroin and the difference between a true and false
one. Participants then create one using chenille sticks, a variety of
embellishments and their imagination. Add this to an SEL or creative writing
class to reinforce the understanding of leadership.

(Grades K-12, All Ages, Special Needs) 45 - 90 minutes
