Jug Band Dan is a three-time winner of CITY Newspaper’s Best Busker competition. His onstage debut was doing comb-and-wax-paper kazoo at a talent show in first grade. Dan performs live with a variety of instruments including mandolin, washboard, marching bass drum and guitar. He performs regularly with his jug band, the Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers, where he plays banjolin, jug, kazoo, and a PVC instrument named after himself called the Walpophone. He also plays in North Star String Band (bluegrass), The Brass Machine (brass band), and Serge & Friends (acoustic roots rock). Local venues and festivals have had him as part of their events for many years. Dan has a master’s degree in education and is certified as a special educator and elementary teacher. He has nearly 2 decades of experience teaching elementary school with a focus on project-based learning and arts-integration and is currently focused on teaching students with disabilities.

Performances

Jug Band Dan goes Solo

Jug Band Dan performs songs from the 1920s & 1930s by jug bands using banjolin, jug and kazoo. He shares some history of the music &
instruments, demonstrates the washboard, a common instrument for this style. Song selection allows for audience participation singing along and
doing call-and-response. If desired with at least 30 days advance notice, Jug Band Dan can provide high quality American made kazoos for audience members at a price of $2 per kazoo.

Jug band performance
The Ruckus Juice Jug Stompers (Rochester’s premiere jug band) perform a wide variety of jug band songs. Instruments include; banjolin (a hybrid banjo/mandolin instrument), jug and kazoo and can also feature guitar, fiddle, banjo, upright bass, and/or washboard. They share a bit of history of this music & instruments. Song selection allows for audience participation singing along and doing call-and-response.

Workshop

Jamming with Jug Band Dan
During these workshops, participants will learn some history of Jug Band instruments including jugs, kazoos & washboards. Then it’s time to create a *kazoo using waxed paper & combs or try their hand at traditional rhythms on DIY **washboards. With a little practice, it’s time to jam. These fun and engaging workshops incorporate group cooperation, rhythmic coordination, and improvisation.
